A dark series…made in 2010 on Stanton Moor, Derbyshire.

My favourite from the pictures made that day.
There is a strange spatial ambiguity going on here. The wall with the soot stain is flat, parallel to the camera back. The soot-stained area is on the same plane as the clean brickwork; it is not recessed. The hanging rope is one metre in front of the wall.

Yet none of this appears so to the eye.
I love this kind of ambiguity in the two-dimensional image.

Printed on Ilford Warmtone Fibre, Beers High Contrast developer, untoned.
